Some thoughts on Kony 2012 →
So I am definitely a lot more skeptical of this than I would have been if I watched this last year. The Occupy movement was kind of disillusioning and left me cynical with respect to grassroots movements. For this reason, after I finished watching this video I went and did some of my own research. I read arguments for and against this Kony 2012 campaign instead of writing the essay I’m...

Why Dmitriy has not been Writing in this Blog
I’m going to write a short explanation for why I haven’t kept this up to date: I haven’t felt like it. Actually, low motivation has kind of been the name of the game for me so far. I miss having a more rigorous academic schedule that checks attendance and all that. The British school system practically necessitates laziness and nero-zero workload.

The Adventure Abroad Continues...
The reason why I haven’t updated my blog the past couple days is because I have always been here. Being of legal drinking age and being in a foreign country, it seems, means that I rarely have time to sit down and properly contemplate the day’s proceedings.
Anyway, I think bullet points worked pretty well last time, so here goes again:
-Liverpool:The university here organized a day...

First Couple of Nights in York, UK
So it’s my third day in York now. I have so many impressions that I just won’t even try to put everything down, but I’ll list a couple of the highlights and interesting tidbits:
-York is fucking beautiful. It’s just so awesome to be able to walk out of a fairly modern looking campus and then stumble upon a medieval wall or gothic cathedral.
-The British people in my...

Human Solidarity: The Final Frontier →
I feel like this is what I have been talking about for some time. I know it might sound farfetched or science fiction-ey but I really do believe that the countries that have any money to spare should invest in their space programs, even if they have to forego some more immediate benefits that could come of putting that money elsewhere. Think about it: what if people lived on the moon? Or Mars? And...

There and back again-A Dmitriy Tale...Chapter 1
The time has finally come. Tomorrow I leave for the UK for my semester abroad! People have been asking me what kind of thoughts and feelings I am getting as I prepare to go. Some of my friends who are also travelling abroad expressed how stressed out and unhappy they were. I’ve really only started stressing about the more “practical” issues tonight tonight now that I have to pack...

A Toast to Sociology and the Night Sky
Dude. The stars. Gotta love ‘em. Wanna know a secret about me, internet? My biggest discomfort with the whole world- with my entire existence- is the relatively established fact that I will probably never be in space. As a kid I fell in love with the sky. Yeah, I went through a fighter pilot phase, an astronaut phase, all that. But what I mean is that I REALLY fell in love with the sky. So,...

Fuck SOPA--A sociological rant →
America is in kind of an economic rut right now, most people would agree. Say what you will about Kondratieff waves or the nature of capitalism- the reality is that in a couple years, our generation will be entering the job market. A job market that, frankly, is pretty fucked right now. History has demonstrated to us that technological innovation leads to economic growth. SOPA will in many ways...
